# Delete a chat, project or account

> How to delete a chat or a project in Newly v2, what you can restore, and how to delete your account.

This page covers deleting things in Newly v2, at app.newly.app and in Newly for Mac. A deleted chat is gone for good. A deleted project can be restored for 30 days. To delete your account, contact support.

## Delete a chat

You can delete a chat once it's no longer running or parked.

1. In the chat list, open the chat's menu. You can also use the menu in the chat's header.
2. If the chat is running, choose **Stop**. If it's parked, choose **Finish**. Until then, **Delete chat** is unavailable and shows "Stop the session first" or "Finish the session first".
3. Choose **Delete chat**. From the chat list in the web app, Newly asks you to confirm. Otherwise the chat is deleted straight away.

<Warning>
  You can't restore a deleted chat.
</Warning>

Deleting a chat doesn't undo the code changes it made. Your project's code stays as it is. To go back to earlier code, use [Restore to here](/code/undo-and-restore) before you delete the chat.

In a shared project, only the owner or a project **Admin** can stop, finish, archive or delete a chat. See [Share a project](/code/sharing-projects).

## Delete a project

You can delete a project you own. Projects that are shared with you don't show a delete option.

1. Open the project menu from the project name at the top of the sidebar.
2. In the **Projects** tab, press the trash icon next to the project.
3. Newly asks you to confirm: "Its sessions stop now and it disappears from Newly. You can restore it for 30 days; after that everything in it is removed for good."
4. Type the project name exactly, then press **Delete**.

Any chats running in the project stop right away, and the project leaves your project list.

### Restore a deleted project

1. Open the project menu from the project name at the top of the sidebar.
2. Open the **Deleted** tab. When projects are waiting to be removed, the tab shows how many, for example **Deleted (1)**.
3. Each project shows how long is left, for example "Deletes in 12 days".
4. Press the restore icon next to the project.

After 30 days the project and everything in it, including its code, is removed for good and can't be restored.

<Tip>
  Want a copy of the code before you delete a project? Download it first with the newly CLI. See [Get your code](/code/get-your-code).
</Tip>

## Delete your account

There's no delete account button in the web app or the Mac app. To delete your Newly v2 account, contact support. See [Getting help](/help/getting-help).

Before you ask:

1. **Cancel your plan first.** Deleting your account doesn't cancel your plan. See [Change, cancel or manage your plan](/billing/manage-your-plan). If Newly granted your plan, mention it in your message to support.
2. **Download any code you want to keep.** See [Get your code](/code/get-your-code).
3. **Write from the email address you sign in with**, so support can find your account.

### If you also have a Newly v1 account

Newly v1 (legacy) and Newly v2 are separate accounts, even if they use the same email. Deleting one doesn't delete the other, and cancelling one plan doesn't cancel the other. Not sure which one you use? See [v1 vs v2: which one am I using?](/get-started/which-newly).
