Which one to use
The web app needs nothing installed. Every chat in the web app is a Remote chat, which runs in the cloud. You can build, preview on cloud simulators and ship to TestFlight entirely from your browser. (Connecting Apple and publishing to TestFlight needs an organization owner or admin.) Newly for Mac does everything the web app does, and adds Local chats that run on your Mac. In Local chats you can use your own Claude or Codex login and a few Mac-only tools. See Local chats on your Mac. If you’re not sure, start with the web app. You can install the Mac app later and pick up the same projects. What’s different
For more on Settings, see Settings and Developer mode. For sharing and ownership, see Share a project.
Install Newly for Mac
Newly for Mac needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later.1
Download the app
Go to newly.app/download and press Download for macOS. The app is signed and notarized by Apple.
2
Install it
Open the downloaded file, move Newly to your Applications folder, and open it from there.
3
Sign in
Sign in the same way you sign in to the web app: email code, Google or GitHub. See Sign up and sign in.
4
Skip local setup for now
The first time, the Mac app may offer to set up local development, which installs Xcode and the iOS Simulator on your Mac. You only need this to preview on your Mac’s own simulator in Local chats. Choose Set this up later to skip it and start building right away.
Updates
The Mac app keeps itself up to date.- It checks for updates in the background and downloads them while you work.
- An update installs when you quit the app. When one is ready, you see Update ready with a Relaunch now button, so you can install it straight away.
- Occasionally an update is needed before you can keep working. The app then shows Update required, downloads the update and asks you to relaunch to install it.
- If an update can’t install, download the app again from newly.app/download and replace the copy in Applications. Your projects and Remote chats are stored in your account, so they’re still there when you sign in.
Things that work a little differently on Mac
Choosing an Apple API key or signing file for TestFlight. The Mac app can’t open these files from the publishing card. If you see “Open the cloud publishing card in your browser to select a key.” or “Open cloud publishing in your browser to import a signing identity.”, go to app.newly.app, sign in with the same account, open the same project and chat, and choose the file there. See Connect Apple and manage signing. Where new chats run. In the Mac app, a new chat can be Remote or Local. The web app only has Remote chats. See Projects, chats, Remote and Local.Other platforms
- Other computers. Newly for Mac needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later. On any other computer, use the web app at app.newly.app.
- Phones. There’s no Newly phone app to download. To try your app on your own iPhone, see Testing on a real phone.
